Source: ADS Archive (ADS Archive) The Roman works at Chew Green, Coquetdalehead. The complex at Chew Green lies immediately adjacent to the Roman road known as Dere Street, constructed during the first century AD by the first governor of Britain, Julius Agricola, in order to facilitate the conquest northwards.
The road Roman works at Chew Green visible as the intermittent prominent remains of the mound of the agger which is on average 5m wide. Chew Green is the site of a large Roman encampment located about 9 miles west of Alwinton in Northumberland, and very close with the border with Scotland.
Archaeological excavations in the s identified a complex including a Roman fort, two fortlets, two camps - the largest structure enclosing an area of 17 acres, surrounded by Coquetdalehead book ramparts and ditches.
To the south lies the Roman military complex of Chew Green consisting of a fort, two fortlets and two camps all served by Dere Street. Constructed during the first century AD by Julius Agricola, the first Roman Governor of Britain, this road stretched from York in the south to the Firth of Forth in the north and, more locally, connected High.
Chew Green (named from a former farm) was at one time Coquetdalehead book to be the 'Ad Fines' of the Romans, being one of the stations beyond Hadrian's Wall, although the true Roman name is unknown.
